UPSC Prelims Syllabus: The Union Public Service
Commission conducts UPSC
Mains and Prelims exam every year. The Civil Services Mains examination aims to test the academic talent and the ability of the candidate to present the answers in a clear and coherent manner. UPSC Civil Services exam is common for the all candidates applying for Civil Services Examination and Indian Forest Service Examination. This exam acts a primary screening for selection of candidates for the Civil Services Mains Examination. One of the important point to remember that the the main core course of this UPSC Examination is intended to analyze the overall intellectual traits and understanding of the concepts rather than only to check their information and memory. The Indian Administrative Service exam officially known as Civil Services Examination (CSE). It is the premier administrative civil service of the Government of India. On hierarchial basis, Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is considered as the highest administrative post among the 24 other services like IPS, IFS, IRS etc.

IAS exam is conducted in 3 stages- Prelims,
Mains and Interview Test. The Prelims stage is an objective test of 200 marks
whereas Mains is subjective one. Since the IAS prelims examination serves as just a
screening test (qualifying in nature) to
select the candidate for the IAS mains therefore the marks obtained in
the preliminary Examination by the candidates will not be counted for
determining their final order of merit.
THREE STAGES OF UPSC IAS
EXAM: IAS
Pattern
Round 1: IAS Preliminary Exam
– 2 papers of 200 marks each
Round 2: IAS Main Exam –
Written exam (9 papers)
Round 3: Interview Round
– 275 marks
Note: Number of candidates to be
appeared to the Main Examination will be about 15 times the total approximate
number of vacancies to be filled in the year in the various posts.
Syllabus for Civil Service Preliminary
Examination?
The Civil Services Preliminary exam consist of
two compulsory papers.
General Studies Paper I
General Studies Paper II.
200 marks for each paper, Paper I
and paper II
The questions will be of objective type
(MCQ).
Paper I - General Studies:
This paper includes areas like; Indian
National Movement, Indian Polity, Basic Economic Understanding, Geography. Current
affairs, General Knowledge.
Paper II - Aptitude Test:
Paper II includes mathematics,
reasoning, analytical ability, and interpersonal skills.
Now, this paper is of only qualifying in nature
so the marks obtained in this section is not counted while making the merit
list.
Note: To qualify for the Prelims
exam, minimum 33 per cent in this paper is mandatory.
The question papers are set both in Hindi and
English. For blind candidates extra 20 minutes are given for each paper.

General Studies – Marks obtained in this
paper will be counted
while making the merit list. So it is good chance to score more to appear in
the Civil Services mains Exam.

II (CSAT) Syllabus

Aptitude test
(CSAT) - This paper is of qualifying
nature.
Marks obtained in this paper will not be counted while making the
merit list. However, the candidate must score at least 33% marks in this
paper to appear in the Civil Services mains Exam.

Two hours for each paper
It is mandatory for the candidate to appear
in both the papers of Prelim exam to be qualified for the evaluation purposes.
If the candidate is unable to appear in any of the paper is liable to be disqualified.
Negative Marking:
There is provision for “1/3rd Negative Marking” in the Prelims exam. So the
candidates need to be careful while making wild guesses in the IAS prelim exams.

Rights Issues, etc.

Paper-II:






Important points to
remember: For UPSC IAS Prelims
1. The questions in both Paper-I
and Paper-II will be of objective type and 200 marks for each paper is alloted.
2. The allotted time for each
paper is 2 hrs
3. The Paper-II (CSAT) will be
a qualifying paper. So to secure entry for the mains, candidate have to score
33% of the paper.
4. It is mandatory for the
candidate to appear in both the papers of Prelim exam to be qualified for the
evaluation purposes. If the candidate is unable to appear in any of the paper is
liable to be disqualified.
